EncompassCulture

Yup another great reader's advisory tool. I appreciate the three main groupings at the start of the home search page and from there on it's all a matter of clicking. I must say though, the options for adult subject matter are pretty limited. I guess if we're looking for obscure material *Google*.
Live long & prosper - did you see? Jim Parsons won an Emmy for Best Actor, Comedy. He's an absolute neurotic hoot on The Big Bang Theory "A neutron in a bar goes to pay for his drinks and the barman turns around and says 'For you, no charge'" Ah, yes it's the afternoon and my head is spinning...

SlideShare?

Looking at another person's Powerpoint presentation is not exactly my first choice for killing time on the internet. I believe the more conscientious of my peers would hail the benefits of visualisng stimuli others have aesthetically arranged and presented via the electronic medium thus negating the need to hash out and create their own, works but yeah, nah. SlideShare barely raises a modicum of interest, I find myself staring at spine labels to see if I still have a pulse.

Tastespotting - mmmmmmmm

Yup! The boys are going through a cooking phase - meeting up once a month to try new recipes - I know, it sounds effeminate but we're secure in our masculinity to admit we enjoy cooking, a couple of quiets and the odd game of texas hold em helps boosts the respectability factor. This maybe a generalisation but I find most PI men I know love to cook - dishes might not turn out so great at first but obviously through trial and error, alot of them find themselves with a signature dish.My dad makes a mean chop suey and an awesome curry. I've yet to find my piece de resistance, but with the help of Tastespotting I'm hoping this recipe will be it!
It involves a wok, chili & chicken! Nuff said.

RSS - Feed My Inbox

I'm not quite sure what to make of RSS feeds. It's convenient, but not a site I'll jump on everyday. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've jumped on Bloglines since last years RSS feeds training. The idea of receiving up to date news from all your current interests at one site makes sense, but does it make it fun? I jump on Google (I know, I know)type in separate interests and receive screes of hits, the logical step is to get an RSS feed from the sites I enjoy - it won't take long, shouldn't be too hard but I can't be bothered. I'd rather trawl and hit a caption that tickles my fancy everytime rather than have it readily available from one site just waiting for me, no fuss. It makes no sense. On Google there is a possibility of finding something new, something better...a mate tells me I'm an idiot, because you can subscribe to RSS feeds as well as jump on Google. I find myself in a losing argument.

Picapp

New Zealand's captain Richie McCaw (L) looks across to the Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations trophies as he stands with team mates before the start of their Bledisloe Cup rugby match against Australia at Melbourne's Docklands Stadium July 31, 2010. REUTERS/Mick Tsikas (AUSTRALIA - Tags: SPORT RUGBY)

Yeah Ritchie, there is a cup missing. The most important cup. "They" screwed you in Cardiff; payback is going to be a proverbial. Roll on 2011.

Picapp is pips, are the public really concerned about copyright when taking images from the net? Obviously, I'm insinuating they aren't because the dynamic, juicy photos they like will be copyrighted and I'm assuming people will generally download the file regardless, unless of course the images are protected - even then there are ways around protection & that for arguments sake just opens up another can of worms...

Web 2.0 part II block 2 - Box it!

What I like about Box is the fact you can create a web document and save it online. No fuss about saving to USB or your computer, one click and your work is saved to Box' server - let them worry about corruption & hacking.
Whether your work is worth hacking is totally subjective.
I'm just going to go ahead and validate my work as of the utmost importance,I quite like the fact I could be anywhere in the world when suddenly overwhelmed by inspiration all I have to do is jump online and capture the muse.
What's wrong with pen & paper?
Nothing. Internal dialogue is such a drag.

Facebook ka-ching!

Bebo who? Bebo what!?Bebo's going to be discontinued...

It seems I've progressed through a continuum of social network sites. Anyone remember Hi5?Not the appalling group peddling to toddlers of middle class Australia; rather a very skeletal version of social network sites, think Facebook sans quizzes, zygna games & video clips, I know...hard to imagine. Along came Bebo with all it's whizzes and doo dangles (I revert to baby speak when I can't express myself, relying on the innate "you know what I mean" assumption) of which I was constantly harassing ex girlfriends (not serious) and made appointments with mates (serious) because apparently Bebo causes temporary amnesia of a forgotten Bell invention called the telephone. Then lo and behold, we arrive at Facebook.

Facebook - the mother of all network sites. Over 400 million active users - what in the blue blazes! Hi5, Bebo - defunct or soon to be - who is left to compete with this monstrosity of nosiness? Where Are You Now? My Space? Ummm M YAWNS.

Anyway enough side tracking, looking at the figures it would be foolhardy for any library not to have a presence on Facebook. Waffle served with a side of ice-cream.

Doff Doff...

Bring back P2P lol!!!

Have customers ever come in to ask if they could download music? Yep, I explain we have a 5MB (how big is a clear sounding music file?) cap on files we're able to download and it's reason enough for them to say ok, look at me blankly for a couple of seconds then procede with life. I'm not sure whether they do continue downloading music from the Learn.net but more often than not I walk past, take a precursory glance and see Lady Gaga frolicking on Youtube...*sigh*

Good for me Reads

Yep, love the site. Great reader's advisory tool and a good ol nosey at what other people are reading. Thats pretty much all I have to say about Goodreads. Making a mockery of this blog title though...ummm so how's it going in Timbuktu?

Twitter Shmitter...

I can see the use of Twitter to promote events for Libraries. Ummm would I use it personally to promote activities within my branch library - nah. It's a site dependent upon the number of followers you accumulate. I reckon it is better sending an email to patrons & posting events on our library website.

I really don't see the point of proclaiming the current events of one's personal life to the virtual world. Seems a tad narcissistic to me - and here I am...blogging. Pot - kettle, meet black...*sigh*

Zamzar rhymes with Ta Dah!

What a gem of a site! Definitely use it to convert dated files - we can no longer hhhmmmmm & aaaaaaahhh about not being able to open and print those pesky .wps files endearing patrons staunchly protest they are able to open on their home pc. Dum dee do - ZAMZAR! conflict resolved!
Chris Rock punch-lined "Robitussen" and made Pfizer millions.
Mark Millar invented "Tunk" the timing with which it was used in "Kick-ass" had me in hysterics.
Zamzar is right up there on my list of all time great use of the English language.

Good spotting on Zamzar Batman. The site will be well used within libraries.

Web 2.0 pt II - Up in the Hizzouse!!!

UgahBugah (pronounced Oogaah-boogaah) all up in the whare! You know me as Infamous Rambler but I'm a straight P Diddy this thing and change the name up to Rambunctious. Like infectious & all sorts of other horrible things...

Okay another random - where's this scene taken from?

(telephone rings)

Hello?

Hello - can I speak to Eddie please?

Eddie's not here. Dyou want to leave a message?

Tell him that justice is waiting for him.

OK Justin. Thank you. Bye bye. [hangs up]

No, justice. Justice!

I have random expectations for Web 2.0! There you go - a hundred words! WOOT!
